there is actually a theory called chimeraism. It's a relatively new development, so I don't know that much about it, but basically, there are people who are their own twins. they have their "twin"'s chromosomes inside them and sometimes one set becomes more prominent than the other. This, in theory, can alter their DNA and other such things. it is also thought to, if the "twin" is of the opposite gender, make a person become attracted to the same sex.
However, homosexuality is not unusual. when a male of low standing does the deed with another male, their statuses among the females rise.

There was a recent study that found that a family of many brothers, the more brothers that were born the more chances the youngest brother would be gay. This might be true of females too. They did the study comparing adopted males versus non-adopted and the result was the non-adopted ended up with a very significant result of this effect.

Nature empowers people to mate with those who are most compatible for the purpose of procreating new life with the most beneficial immune system possible. If the parents are not most compatible (their immune systems are too alike) then the progeny will have a weaker immune system than is optimal. If this evolutionary behavior becomes common, the species will be at risk because the diseases that prey on us are constantly evolving better attacks against our immune systems. To discourage this behavior, nature makes some of the progeny effectively sterile, by making them homosexual.

Instinct. Its born into them the same way being attracted to the opposite is born into us. It's the same basic triggers that make us hungry, thirsty, horny, right or left-handed. One in ten is sexually attracted to the same or both genders.
