Christopher Columbus is given the credit, but some think the Vikings, the Chinese (on the Pacific side, of course), or even the Irish found it first. Amerigo Vespucci was the cartographer who mapped out the details of Columbus' journeys and is credited with naming and idenitfying the land mass now known as the Americas. Columbus actually was credited with landing in the Caribbean, but thought it was the western Indies.

However, there is a growing theory that the norse explorers were the first to discover North America, with Eric the Red being the discoverer.
