I am planning to participate in a Study Abroad program and I am torn between Chinese and Japanese. Both are high demand languages and I am both a fan of the two cultures... I love Japan for their anime, manga, and music (Arashi!)... I love China for their good dramas and music too... And yes, superb cultures...

I am planning to be a Foreign Service Officer too... What do you think is the language I should choose given that I both LOVE the language and culture??? I'd rather hear opinions than tossing a coin...

Thanks!

I spent ten years working for a Japanese engineering company in Tokyo; it was valuable experience for me in every way.

Both China and Japan will continue to have important relations with the U.S., and you couldn't go wrong with either one; but, if you are looking at a career in translation, I might suggest that you think more of Chinese, as the Chinese economy is now where the Japanese economy was about 40 years ago, and will only become more important to to U.S. investors in the future.

Good luck!

it would be bias if i would say japan.for me its a beautiful country and great people to deal with.currently I'm living in japan and enjoying their wonderful culture,Japanese are kind polite and generous.base on their languages Japanese is not so hard to learn they have 3 writing "katakana" "hiragana" and "kanji" which is too similar to Chinese writ ting but of course differ in meaning.
as i study Japanese i found out that Chinese is more difficult to understand and specially to write. i dint know much about china because i never been their but as my friends told me it is a beautifully country also but really has a difficult language to learn. they have Chinese-mandarin,Chinese-Cantonese, etc....

but of course the final decision is yours!
good luck!!

I will suggest you to apply through CUCAS, CUCAS is a professional online platform for international students to apply for Chinese universities, it has a strong relationship with over 300 universities in China. They do not ask for any fee, the application fee is collect by them but only on behalf of the university, CUCAS also hold social activities for international students so they will not get bored, they always try to think as a foreigner and help international students to solve their problems. Very nice.

sounds like you only love japan's entertainment, go try their food and see which you are willing to eat on a daily basis.
