Alot of the things people consider "technology" these days are little gadgets such as cell phones and palm pilots and flat screen displays and what have you which make little contribution to the actual forecasting process. I.e., you can get a tiny radar image on your cell phone but it is nothing more than a weather service met could see on an AFOS screen more than a decade ago - only alot smaller so you can't see a whole lot of detail. These days you can get an automated forecast for your location on your cell phone which some computer algorithm spits out, but it is no match for someone analyzing the data. In many ways speed and quantity is sacrificed for accuracy and quality.

Some technological advances are very helpful such as doppler radars replacing conventional radars, but many improvements come from using the existing technology more effectively to improve observation and modeling - theoretical advancements which make it possible to use satellites to sound the atmopshere, better understanding of physical processes from reasearch to make models more accurate, understanding small scale processes better so we can be better at saying whether a certain weather feature will occur in one county and not the next, etc.

It's not only up to technology. It's also up to research and something as simple as weather observations.

A forecaster uses very complex computer-generated models when forecasting the weather. These models describe what will happen in the atmosphere (for instance, concerning winds, temperature, and humidity) over the coming hours or days.

The models are not perfect, partly because the research about the weather is far from finished, and partly because the physics in the atmosphere is so complicated that some approximations have to be made.

But the biggest problem is the fact that the computer models require observational in-data. Information from weather satellites, weather radar, soundings, and weather observations are put into the computer models, and then the computer starts "calculating the weather into the future". But there are not enough weather obserations and weather radars, especially not over the oceans. If this would change, weather forecasts would improve considerably.

Because we still don't know what causes the charge separation that leads to lightning, how can we possibly predict the weather more accurately? The reason why we can't predict the weather more accurately is because it's still not officialy known that the electric fields of Earth play a greater role in regulating our weather systems than we give them credit fore.

If we can't predict the weather ten days from now, how in Al Gore's name can we predict "global warming" in 100, 200 or 1,000 years? This question illustrates the folly of the whole idea. If we can't stop it, how did we ever start it?

"Global warming" is just a way that nations which can't outproduce us want to use to bring us down to their level. I, for one, don't want to live in Biafra or Bangladesh. I like my America as it is. If all you environmentalist wackos love living in the 19th century so much, move to some third-world cesspool now and don't come back.

I think they're doing pretty good, myself. You can't predict last minute changes in the way the air currents flow. Besides, what's the point if no one listens. LA was given pretty accurate info on what to expect before Katrina, but no one did anything.
