It CAN be reduced by changing the way animals are raised - the current method of manure management has remained fairly steady for 13 years (source EPA). However, it can be reduced with a consumer move to buy directly from farms that do not raise in large confinement situations.
Landfills produce over three times the methane of commercial manure systems - what is being DONE to reduce that? More disposable items to add to it. Use it up toss it out.
Natural gas also produce more methane than animals. And before rushing to judgement about eliminating animals take a peek at the only one in the top ten showing a steady increase over 13 years...wastewater treatment...that's manure management for HUMANS. In not so many years it will pass livestock manure systems yet I don't hear that discussed. And it doesn't matter if you're a vegetarian or a meat eater...if you don't have a septic system or a composting toilet you're contributing to that.

I don't see cow farts as a problem. There is more methane produced by volcanos than cows will ever produce. And don't forget about all the wild buffalo and bison methane, are we going to slaughter them because of a silly fear of methane?
Lets work on developing solar and wind power instead.

I reckon if those complainers positioned their minds to it they could arise with a thank you to recycle all this gas they are occurring approximately. human beings underestimate the performance of a cow - an entire manufacturing unit as a dairy cow.....of direction they're going to produce pollutants and waste. consistent with threat they could desire to look nearer to homestead on the countless man made pollution that are what's quite destroying our planet.

Give the cows Bean-o.
Otherwise, you can't reduce the amount that is *produced* -- you have to deal with it post-production. That's a different issue.
