It's not always the case.

This is an incredibly good question. I don't think I know for sure although there are unsubstantiated stories that it is that Missionary style (facing each other) was at various times made by law or religious decree to be the ONLY acceptable position in either the law or god's eyes.

The reported motivation for this was to provide the least amount of sexual feelings for the participants, particularly the woman. (This isn't unusual for a culture when you consider female circumcision. Still doesn't make it right.) As I said, the source that I heard this from did not provide me with a source to back it up, maybe another answerer will know more.

Since we still have sodomy laws in many states in America, I can't say that this governmentally enforced position has really gone away. In many states you could technically be arrested for oral sex or anal sex. That's some pretty strong motivation to not do anything that could be perceived as sodomy.

For starters, we are the intelligent species and can speak. We generally face each other when we speak. We unconsciencely record the other's facial expressions, etc. We can derive sexual intimacy from one's face. Speaking and kissing enhances mating. It provides permission.

It helps with the intimacy. You know how people in a new relationship stare into each others eyes for hours? When you look at someone you love your pupils become bigger, and that's a sign of intimacy. You partner sees that and feels closer to you.
It's tiny changes in the pupil size, but our subconscious sees it and reacts to it.

Not necessarily.. Doggy style and sideway style does not allow them to face each other...

Nevertheless... facing each other allows them to observe the opposite party to see their reaction and all... and sometimes.. the power of facial expressions, it can help to boost the mating process..

You are referring to the "Missionary Position" that was introduced by puritanical Christian Missionaries that saw Aboriginal tribes mating "doggie style". They didn't like that as the missionaries thought that was too animistic, and told them they would go to hell if they did it that way, as God forbid, we can't behave like animals (even though that is what we are).

Because the man's penis go into the woman's vagina so they sorta have to face each other because those body parts are in the front them.
