Right now I am ashamed of our leaders and many of the people who live here. Their parents sure didn't know what they were doing when they raised them.
We are losing our freedoms, getting people killed and ripping off the poor to give to those who already have more than they need.
We are no longer leaders by example of what is right! To most of the world we represent all that is wrong!
Freedom!! you have got to be kidding! So we are better than China, thats 1 and that isn't saying a hell of a lot when you consider Europe for examle. Almost anywhere in Europe is better than here, and they treat them better as well.
And don't tell me to love it ir leave it! I EARNED mine!! Did you?
"Look at history, man. The Romans began with a republic, just like we did. The freedom and prosperity that followed made them complacent, apathetic. They became fat and happy, and mistakenly figured that government was responsible. Since their government was such a Good Thing, it didn't need watching, so few paid it any attention. Those with a knack for politics took advantage of that to increase their power, and also their stash. Eventually the republic degraded into an empire, and suffered the fate of all empires. They go broke trying to keep control of every place they've conquered.
"We're heading down the same road. Only this time, it's happening faster. It took three, four centuries for Rome to decline and fall. We might do it in three or four decades. Hell, maybe three or four years. Or months! Who the hell knows?"
He paused for a moment; I could see him trying to calm his breathing. He began to slowly read from the Wall, his eyes moving randomly over the panel. "David T. Hilton. William C. Langham. John A. Gibson. Richard Galan. Danny Lee Frye. Cecil D. Lamm. All these boys blown off the face of the Earth, because we just can't keep our noses out of what's happening on the other side of the world. Ever read George Washington's Farewell Address?"
I shook my head. "He told us not to concern ourselves with what other countries are doing to and amongst themselves. He said it would just get us mired in a big mess. But did we listen? Nooooo. He warned us! Jefferson warned us! Most all of the Founders warned us! John Quincy Adams, about thirty years later, said 'America does not go out in search of monsters to destroy.' Well, now we do, John Q.
"You know what I finally figured out? People don't start wars. Countries don't start wars. It's governments that start wars. ******' governments. And we go along with it. Whenever you see a problem, social or economic or political, and think that government should do something about the problem, do a little homework and you'll probably find that government is the source of the problem. And war is just the epitome of government problem solving. So what if a majority thinks that this coming war is right. The majority is just something that government manufactures and manipulates to give the appearance of legitimacy to what government does.
"And as for those government bozos who say that those who question their plans and motives is unpatriotic and aiding the enemy, well, they can just kiss my ***."

it is much better than the places that my former bosnian neighbors, former chinese neighbors and former irish neighbors came from - I say former as they all have become citizens of the USA. They could tell you things like being able to sleep soundly as no one was going to perhaps blow up their home - they saw their friends killed. They can buy food in the store instead of standing in a long line and hoping that the person handing out the food would not run out. Their children go to school and actually learn something - 2 children had no school in the old country. They look at this place as one of opportunity and new beginnings. Maybe it is the perception we should all try to have instead of looking for the crap - there will always be crap somewhere, but there is a lot of good too. I prefer to look at my country as a place where people who are afraid can come and let those fears rest.

Which America?
North America = Canada, USA, Mexico
Central America
South America
Do you mean the United States of America?
If yes, I think it is the best there is by far, with all it's faults. No other country has, will, or ever equal the total sum of our parts. We should be proud to be USA citizens, and start making this country an even greater nation. GO USA!

People who hate America must be ignorant of the rest of the world. America may do loads of dubious things and be far from the democratic egalitarian ideal it holds up, but it's still loads better than countries like China and Russia, and no worse than any other powerful democracy. People should be critical America but also be be aware of how much freedom and justice is taken for granted.
For the record, I'm not American.

A GREAT place to live, but you GOT TO BE smart to make it successfully, or else you will be like the many Americans who are so naive and believes what they see on TV. It is a land that has all races, religions, languages, America is the entire world in one country. I LOVE it. I don't get bored seeing the same people everyday. I see ALL. I don't have to travel to other places and see'em.

i think America is the "new Rome." This country is on an immoral fast trek to Hell. The people in this country are no longer concerned with God anymore if He doesn't fit into their world. We will go out the same way Babylon, Greece, and Rome did, and it won't be long. It's really kind of sad if you think about it.

America is 2 continents. People should really start referring to countries in these continents by their individual names. USA is not America just as Canada is not America, nor is Mexico, Argentina or Brazil.
Since the question is quite obviously about the US of A, I think it is a great country in terms of entrepreneurship and productivity. However, it really needs to keep off the internal affairs of countries elsewhere. It has plenty of problems within itself that require solutions- for instance racism, bad governance, widening rich-poor gap and a less than commendable world cup performance.
Recent military actions of USA in the middle east display a lack of foresight and vision among those who proactively sought such actions. Most of the public were clearly more interested in the internal problems of the country, rather than something thousands of miles away, but were unable to see events in proper perspective because of lack of information and biased coverage of news. The government were also successful in arousing the patriotic fervour which blinds most to more obvious realities( It has become a joke with people trying not to think about the follies of the government by repeatedly saying "USA").
It is perhaps an attempt on the part of the government to hide its incompetence by trying to solve an issue far from home where the voters cant see how inept the people they chose really are. However issues closer to the country such as relief to hurricane victims, lack of action against oil companies that pollute the environment and add to global warming, and tax cuts that favour the rich have shown how inept and spineless the present government really is.
Even as USA sets the standard for rest of the world in creation of wealth, scientific&technological research and marketing products internationaly( Mcdonalds, Microsoft), its democratic processes are at an infantile state. Elections are one big party with colourful conventions, rallies and media frenzy misleading the electorate to think that the more jovial the candidate the better his abilities at governance. Making full use of democracy requires the intelligent use of the right to vote and in the USA, the voters are moved not by the candidates/party's stand on important issues such as foreign/economic policy, but by appearances of the candidate and his family, extent of campaigning and their choice of party( Rep./Dem.). Careless use of right to vote results in politicians taking their posts for granted and the result is the equally careless governance that the people get.
USA has some great resources, but at the wrong hands these can be turned against the rest of the world, which will lead to greater hostility and animosity in the minds of the undecided millions towards it- the ideal situation for any extremist who wishes to recruit for such causes as the "Jihad".The acts of such terrorists cause greatest damage not to administration officials (who get excuses for more wars) but to ordinary people. Even as they wish no harm to people in other parts of the world, by endorsing candidates whose foreign policies imply such harm, they precipitate the anger and frustration of people elsewhere, which finds expression as acts of terror. Hence it is essential that the electorate when voting focus on foreign and economic policies of candidates.
What I think of "America(USA)" depends on how the people of that country voted in the last presidential elections- as of this day
30th of June 2006, the US is a mess. What it will be a year from now waits to be seen.
