If you are unwilling to touch it, try moving it with a stick or tongs.
Dead things FEEL dead- inert, not resisting, lighter than usual. Either very stiff or very limp. You move it to an awkward position and it does not resist or move back on its own.
An alive snake also breathes and uses its tongue. Watch the body, about 1/4th of the way down, for breathing. It may be slow and subtle, but it is visible. If the tongue is not being used, it is either sleeping, really ill, or dead.

Everything craps when it dies. So if its sitting there with poo stuck to its butt, it's either dead or need a bath. Also rigormortis (sp) is a good sign.

Im answering alot of your question it seems. Anyways, you can pick him up and move him, he should jerk and move, thats one way to tell if he is alive. Besides that there is not really anyway. If his eyes have became clouded and he is barily moving then let me just say he is about to shed so please dont throw him out.
