you have a file that is 10gb or more?????
dude, all I can say is, as of now, we dont hv stuff that can handle sizes that big
most dvds can handle somewhere in the range of 3-4 gb
over the next one year, HD-DVD or BLU-RAY is supposed to gain acceptance and both claim the ability to store 30+ GB of data

Until then, I suggest you split your file up, then back it up into DVDs and then recombine. Choose any freely available file splitter.

First of all, a dual-layer DVD is about as close as you're going to get right now. KillJoy2 said that it holds 9.3GB, but it actually is limited to 8.5GB (not quite double the capacity of single layer discs).

You can use a program like DVD shrink or even better, Nerovision which comes with Nero Ultra Edition, to compress the video down to a size that will fit. Of course, you may lose some quality if it's compressed too much. Anything set over 80% in either of the two apps I mentioned will not likely show any loss of quality to the naked eye. Most of the compression is done when there is little movement on the screen and still images can be replicated to save space.

There are two types of DVD's (There are also two format "-/+")
1) Regular DVD which hold about 4.7GB
(Type of media doesn't matter)
2)Double or Dual Layer DVD "DVD+/-DL" which holds about 9.3 GB
Now there is a new DVD technology comming out;
HD DVD which has up two 3 or 4 layers about 18GB and maybe up to 27GB.
To make this short and easy for you is;
you have two options:
1) Compress your video with a video encoder (encode it to a different format) or Crompress it with WIN RAR
2) Get a separete hard drive for your video.

If you want more options you have to give more specific detail about what you are trying to back up.

DVD's size is big, but I think current mainstream DVD disk is only 4.7 GB (for single layer) or 8.5 GB (for dual layer).

You could try buying an external harddisk, or you could also split the video files into 2 DVD.

You could also reduce the size of the video file by compressing them into a lower quality encoding.

Please choose which is convinient for you:
- external harddisk (only replayable on computers, and supporting devices)
- splitting into 2 disk. (you have to carry 2 disk)
- reencoding the video file into a compressed format (you might lose some quality, although it shouldn't be noticable)
