I'm not planning to kill anyone. I'm just wondering how realsitic this book im reading is

A friend's ex-wife poisoned his dinner while we were out of the house. Since we shared it, no one died, but we both got a really bad case of the runs. Considering how ill I was and double it, I would guess even if he'd eaten the whole thing it wouldn't have killed him.
Though I don't know how much she put in there.

That stuff has a definite smell.

It really depends on the immune system and constituion of the victim. If they're already sick, probably not much.
A healthy adult: Probably a lot. An ounce or more?

Cyanide is a very poisonous chemical. Has a sweet smell.
A lethal dose of liquid cyanide
=any dose of liquid cyanide, even in small amounts.
