Having food and water is primary for survival.
So in truth, the oldest profession is Hunting. And the companions of hunting are Foraging and Gathering.

You can't smuggle unless someone has first obtained something, can you? Nor can you pay for sexual favors, unless you've done some hunting or gathering.

Then, there's also Poaching.
Or pirating. Or Thievery.

And killing was common, so soldiery and policing were right there at the beginning, too."Gotta protect my stuff!"

Later came Farming, but that did not replace hunting, merely supplemented it.But
that required land ownership, and Landlording.

Arguing about who owns what led to Lawyering. Keeping track of your stuff led to Accounting.

This has been a neat question ! Takes us to our roots. Very thought-stimulating.

- money. - it is sad. - many wish it was not, but won't do anything serious about it either. because at the end of the day it is uncool or unusual to do something about it. - depends on each person's personality and maturity (interaction of the person with the reality in the society) the saddest part of all is that while it is uncool to do something about it. most who don't do anything about it, don't know what is that really cool thing they must be doing either. so they are just wondering and wasting their precious life. some get lazy, some just immitate the successful, some get depressed (other side of the same coin of anger) or angry and drunk. or a combination. they may give up if they are not lucky to find the right path. they may leave their body angry and get the next body with the same inherent anger. that is why they ask themselves why was i born so sad, so depressed or wanting something i don't know what....?

Prostitution is the oldest profession in the world, although it was sexual favours for food and not money.
You can see prostitution even today in some ape or monkey (don't remember exactly) species where females provide sexual favors for food.

You could be right. But your question focused on monetary payment (money, cash, etc.). So prostitution could be the oldest if not one of the oldest professions using money as a tool to acquire those services.

In my opinion prostitutes and hired killers were the oldest "professionals" of human culture. Only they were paid in food or living space in a better situated cave....

I think it is the oldest profession, and it probably predates money. It was sex for bananas or something of similar value.

prostitution would be the oldest for compensation. it would be impossible to determine which would be the oldest for 'money'.
