a compass tells you which way is north. once you know where north is you can tell in which directions south, east, and west is.

Like they say, if you are lost in the woods just decide to follow the compass for one direction (obviously North should be the easiest since you just follow the arrow), but never waver from the chosen direction

Make sure you buy a good compass, preferably one that can adjust for declination. Make sure you know the declination (magnetic disparity) where you are travelling, because True North and Magnetic North are not the same. The megnetic pole is not at the North Pole, in fact it is somewhere over Canada.
