It doesn't, and obviously hasn't. People just wish they could have someone else solve their problems, take their worries and fears away, and basically have someone to rely on. That's a common feeling to have, but with the right support group, persistence, enthusiasm and smarts, we all progress w/o Supes.
Besides, if Superman existed, what other crazy stuff would? :-)

Superman sucks. The world doesn't need him. He's the lamest superhero ever. Spider-man and Batman own him.

Cause he rocks and is sooo delisciously sexy, if there was a real Superman, all women would expect more of their men, be thankful there isn't and live the fantasy with us!!
