Because people don't realize the history of rock and roll. If they would look back at history they would realize that Rock and ROll was influenced heavily by blues music, which in turn was considered "black" music. i think it's great that you have different taste and don't feel the pressure to listen to rap just cuz it's consired "black" music. People are individuals and should not feel forced to listen to a certain type of music just because society says you should listen to a certain type of music. :-)

I mean the main reason with out going in history of music is that, rock and techno music has more white fans and rap music has more black fans.
And people make misunderstandings in that.

Rock was not only helped by black music...it was originally invented by black musicians (chuck berry, for example) and built on by white musicians (elvis, for example). While I don't think there is such thing as "black," "white," or any other type of music, there are predominantly groups that lean to certain genres. I think it's wrong of your friends to do that to you, but hey, what are friends for? The only basis for "white" or "black" music I use is to describe the artist, regardless of genre. Fishbone, a popular punk/ska band, are black. Atmosphere, a popular hip hop artist, is white.
But to answer your question, your statement is a gross overgeneralization. Maybe in your experience it is true, but a lot of the black people I know listen to Creed and Nickelback, both of which I wouldn't listen to if my life depended on it. Retroactively, many of the white people I know love Eminem, another one I can't stand.

I agree with RedDragon45. Don't worry about what everybody else thinks. If you like rock, that's your choice. If you're not into hip hop or R&B that much, that's fine - you do you. If people don't like it, then too bad. It just shows how narrow-minded and ignorant they are. Who are they to tell you what you should and shouldn't be listening to? Why are they even concerned? Sounds to me like they have some identity issues to work out.
Personally, I like lots of genres of music besides hip hop and R&B, but that doesn't mean something's wrong with me and it doesn't make me any less black. The same goes for you too.

I don't want to sound rasict or anything, really. But it's probably because there aren't that many black people in rock and techno music TODAY... and a lot of the youth don't care about how music originated, just what's hot NOW. Besides, there are lot more black people in rap music - and if you haven't noticed, alot of black people are influenced by rap. Not all, but many.

Probably because they're too ignorant to realize what you're saying is true. I've had people call me "white girl" for my musical selections (Green Day, The Clash, etc..), and it only makes me turn the music up, much to their dismay!!! Rock on, girl!!!

I don't believe things like this, music is music! whoever strats it, whoever invented it, who cares! since i love it, i listen to it!!! Music has nothing to do with races, but it is a feeling! and interest. there is no way you could be restricted to listen music!! remeber music world wide language!
