The women used to be completely sedated for the entire labor and birth, and then they were awake long enought to push and then knocked out just before the birth. Is this option still available, and how safe (or not safe)? Anyone have this kind of birth?

The thing they use now is a numbing thing called an epidural, but what I read was more like a sedative gas that worked instantly, and was used just before the birth to save the mother from too much pain. And I'm not pregnant, just curious. =)

LOL...I was born that way. And they don't practice it anymore because it is bad for the baby (too much anesthesia). The only way they will knock you out now is if you need a c-section and even then they might only numb you from the waist down (I've delivered both of these ways).

This is not safe and believe it or not it will prolong the very thing you are hoping to escape in the process. You need to be awake and active for the safe birth of your child. You can do a lot to help yourself before time.

Take a class learn the breathing and other techniques they will help you no matter how you give birth. also WALK AS MUCH AS YOU CAN FOR AS LONG AS YOU CAN, EVEN ONCE LABOR HAS STARTED.
The lay on your back method is actually the hard way . think about it is it easier to push down or to push sideways. build up your muscles as much as you can and youwill have a faster less painful delivery. Trust me I know what I am talking about. the more work you do before the less you will do later.

And it is also true, once you see that little baby you will not remembe one bit of that pain. Good Luck

It is not available and obviously not safe. Even when you have a cesarian, you must be sedated seconds before the incision, because the baby is hurt otherwise. Of course, there is the solution of anesthesia of the lower body only (I don't know the term in english, it is done with a shot in the spine). That's the best painless way.

I believe that the drug you are referring to was found to cause birth defects and brain damage. Please do your research, ask a doctor. If you are pregnant and nervous about the birth, talk to women who have had long labors, who will usually say that adrenaline (and drugs) helped, it was still an intense experience (to say the least), but worth it in the end :)

If you are looking at alternative methods, I've read about women who give birth in a pool of warm water, which is supposed to be more comfortable for the baby.

That's not safe for the baby, you shouldn't do it. Epidurals work just fine. You know the Indians used to go out and squat behind a bush and have the baby. No pain meds or anything.

It's not available anymore for vaginal birth, the only way they do it now a days is if you have a planned c-section and you request it.

Your best bet is to talk to your obgyn and ask him/her about birthing practices and what is done now and what isn't.
