No, I don't think it is pointless. It's a part of history. History set the pathway for the future. In the event that Christopher Columbus didn't set sail for the New World, how many people would of still believed that the Earth was flat? What would of happened if Ferdinand Magellan didn't sail? We wouldn't have the Strait of Magellan. What would of happened if the first Pilgrims didn't land on Plymouth Rock?.... If you take a closer look at history, and the farther you go back you will see how it began... A person who took that first "step" into believing that nothing is impossible.

Columbus Day = celebration of the 'Europeanization' of America. What's to celebrate? Depends on who you talk to. Don't know, but Italian-Americans are sure fond of it and it does fall at just the right time in early October when one could use a little R&R long-weekend. Not intedning any "smart remarks" just stating the way it stands in modern USA. If they took away Columbus Day then I think they'd have to plug some new holiday in that time-slot.

i do think it's pointless, n i think ur absolutely right, it does cheat the Native Americans out of their right to claim being here first. i live in alabama, n saying that Columbus 'discovered' america would be like me going over to Georgia and saying 'i found it' when there r already millions of ppl there. i think, personally, that saying Columbus 'discovered' America,(which he didn't even do even if u take the Native Americans out of the picture, he never discovered America, he landed on San Salvador and Hispanola), is dehumanizing to the cultures that were already present for hundreds of thousands of years, well established cultures that had their own history, their own langauges, and their own religions, many of them in many ways much more civilized than the Europeans.
and for my friend who said Columbus was the first guy to dare think the world was round, he/she is mistaken. the first modern globe was made in 1492, a few months prior to Columbus' departure. they already knew the world wasn't flat.

without Columbus, u would not be here asking this question, yahoo would not be here, bush and his bashers on yahoo, Clinton and AL gore, Kerry etc would not be here running for a job, osama would have no twin towers to destroy and all illegal Mexicans would have no place to go illegally, so many ifs. if Columbus did not come here USA would be like Mexico and nobody wants to come here, not even Mexicans as there is no need for cheap labour.

... and not only that, he thought he was in India, for crying out loud, and called the Native Americans "Indians". For some strange reason, nobody thought to correct that mistake, so we still talk about "Red Indians". How dumb is that?
