I have hear that tim wakefield one of the few pitchers ever to strike out 4 batters in an inning. what do they mean by that?

If the batter swings and misses the 3rd strike and the catcher drops the ball the batter can run to first bash before the catcher throws him out. It is still an out but the batter gets the base. This is how you can have 4 strike outs in 1 inning.

It may have happened more than once to Tim as he is primarily a knuckleball pitcher and even his personal catcher, Doug Mirabelli, sometimes has trouble catching his pitches. The flutter of the knuckleball often results in passed balls.

THE BATTER STRIKE OUT AND THE CATCHER WASN'T ABOVE TO HANDER HE PITCH SO HE WERE SAFE
