They all have three consecutive alphabetic letters in sequence in the individual word.

DEFT has "DEF."
FIRST has "RST."
CALMNESS has "LMN."
CANOPY has "NOP."
LAUGHING has "GHI."
STUPID has "STU."
HIJACK has "HIJ."
