I am a salaried employee and my employer is forcing me to take a vacation day on an unscheduled shut down day (july 3). I think my vacation time should be used by my will and not by theirs. Any opinions or experiences.

Straight up, if your employer is shutting down that day, you should NOT have to use of of your vacation days... Im sure you were willing to work that day, yes?

I dont think that is fair... and is an arguement worth fighting...

But meh, Im just 23, what do I know?

Many of the employers of the USA are doing this now. My last 2 companies have demanded the employees use their vacation time to cover shut downs throughout the year. I think Unions should start getting more involved, and if you don't have one,,,, GET ONE!

It's common practice in many industries. In my engineering career, I have had this happen many times. Often the employer will offer to let you give up the day's pay instead of taking vacation; but that amounts to the same thing.

Contact your local labor board and find out. If you live in a right-to-work-state, they can pretty much do as they please. Find out for sure, though.
