al·ge·bra [áljəbrə]
n
1. mathematics using letters as symbols: a branch of mathematics in which symbols, usually letters of the alphabet, are used to represent unknown numbers and in doing so generalize arithmetic.
2. study of mathematical structures: the study of structures in mathematics such as groups, rings, fields, and categories.

[Mid-16th century. Via Italian and medieval Latin from Arabic al-jabr , literally “the reuniting,” in the title of the treatise “The science of reunion and equation,” by the mathematician al-Khwarizmi.]

Algebra (from Arabic: الجبر, al-ğabr) is a branch of mathematics concerning the study of structure, relation and quantity. Elementary algebra is often taught in secondary education and gives an introduction to the basic ideas of algebra: studying what happens when numbers are added or multiplied, and how to make polynomials and find their roots.

Algebra is much broader than elementary algebra and can be generalized. Rather than working directly with numbers, one can work with symbols, variables, or elements of some set. Addition and multiplication are viewed as general operations, and their precise definitions lead to structures such as groups, rings and fields.

Together with geometry and analysis, algebra is one of the three main branches of mathematics.

Algebra is a branch of mathematics which may be roughly characterized as a generalization and extension of arithmetic, in which symbols are employed to denote operations, and letters to represent number and quantity; it also refers to a particular kind of abstract algebra structure, the algebra over a field. The word algebra is of Arabic origin.

Algebra is the branch of elementary mathematics which uses symbols to stand for unknown quantities. In a more basic sense, it consists of solving equations or manipulating expressions which contain symbols (usually letters, like x, y or z) as well as numbers and functions. Solving equations is really a part of algebra.

If I recall correctly, it's orginaly an Arabic discipline of abstract thought called Al-Jabr, meant to deal with hypothetical mathematical problems in a way that would be true regardless of what number the letter you had chosen was representing.

It's way of saying "worry about what this number is later, and just deal with it as a symbol for now".
