you need to specify what type of style you are required to use. what class is it for?

mla: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/557/01/
those two are the most common. i had to use something different all together.

Go to your school library and read copies of succesful papers. You'll know what they are looking for.

MLA, APA - google either one - your professor should offer some criteria as well.

mla or apa

apa is usually used for scienific papers..
mla for general papers
