Why do MMORPGs get cranked out at an alarming rate compared to single-player RPGs?

Nowadays it seems the only companies that make single player RPGs anymore are indy European companies (and frankly most of them suck). While the obvious answer is that MMORPGs continue to create monthly revenue, I think it may run deeper than that. Has the gaming world abandoned the true epic RPG? (On a side note, curse World Of Warcraft curse it to hell)

You mean Warcrack? I think MMORPGS are just the way things are headed as the internet becomes more and more embedded in our culture and our daily lives. There will always be a market for single player RPG's, but I think the problem is no one has had a very original idea for a while. FF7 was, at least for me, the last great RPG.

As for why the MMORPGS keep getting cranked out, I think you're right in your thinking that people are willing to pay for them. I think in a much broader sense, people enjoy these games so much because they feel a greater sense of accomplishment and acceptance from real people instead of AI-controlled members of a party. It's a chance for gamers to grow and bond with other gamers in a setting of mutual interest.

Well, in MMORPG, you won't get the same answer everytime you talk to the same person. I personally prefers Single player RPG, though, the best games are still single player RPGs, since most MMORPG relies on their community, and not the quality of the game itself, and all MMORPG doesn't have any stories.
