Try finding other people to run with. It helps big time. Go to your local running store and see if they have any running groups there. Consistancy is key so try not to take more than one day off at a time. Run at least 3 miles at a time. Don't sandbag every run. Do some easy and push the pace on others. Throw in some speedwork once or twice a week. My favorite speed workout is as follows: warm up for 10 min then stretch; 1min easy, 1 min hard; 1 min easy, 2 min hard; 1 min easy, 3 min hard; 1 min easy; 4 min hard; 2 min easy 4min hard; 2 min easy, 3 min hard, 1 min easy, 2 min hard, 1 min easy 1 min hard. 400 and 200 repeats are good also.
Sometimes it is hard to stay motivated. Sign up for a race in advance. That way you have a goal set.
Good luck. You can definitely achieve your goal!

build up your endurance by running longer distances, 2-3 miles, at a 6-7 minute pace.
build up your speed by running sprints. on a quarter mile track, run half a lap as fast as you can, then fast jog/slow run for a lap and a half. repeat 4-6 times. this builds up your speed and teaches your body to rest while still running.
another good workout is to run up a hill, maybe a quarter mile, then jog back down, and repeat. if you dont have a good hill you can run up the steps on the bleachers at the track.

I presume you are physically fit and have no medical issues... you can start with a brisk walk and a jog maybe till you can reach 5 - 6 kms, once you build up the required stamina and endurance, you could attempt to increase your pace with some long strides and short burst of sprints... gradually increase the sprints and it wont be long before you suprise yourself with sub 6mins to cover the mile..

you have to mix your endurance and pace workouts. run more than one mile, maybe three for endurance. and then do pace work on a treadmill or track.
