I love the irony! Seems to me that it's because we focus more on short term quality of our lives than long term sustainability of the planet's resources (ie self importance, arrogance). As education rich, supposed 'guardians' of the world, we shouldn't feel the need to say "we can pollute the way we do because other countries are worse." This strikes me as classic shirking of responsibility. It's like saying I'm good because I only murdered one person whereas someone else murdered five.
Ultimately, our awareness of the need to be the custodians of our planet will either kick in or we'll pollute ourselves out of existence. Will the planet really miss us?

Well the civilized world has all the cars and factories and stuff that cause most of the pollution.

Because "civilized" is a term that humans coined the second they started using tools, stopping to defecate, viewing sex as a sinful act, creating unnecessary medicines, and all around tampering with the world that was presented before us.
Not to make this a religious question, but I don't blame Eve for the Garden of Eden incident. I think it was a group effort.

Easy. Everyone wants quick packaged food and products.
Actually there is more pollution in 3rd world type countries because they don't have the proper systems in place to remove refuse or clean water.

Apparently the way to be "civilized" is the dump your sewage in the rivers and pollute the air with noxiuos gasses. Hooray for technology.

It might seem that way but the chinks got us beat. At least some countries to have some emission/pollution laws. Abroad, they just do whatever. China is terrible right now they keep making coal-fired pwr plants to supplement their booming population......
