I thinkthat as we have become a more global community, our media reflects that change. Superman is not just an American hero, he is a global hero.

I also think it is a little tongue in cheek, just like in the first X-Men movie, when someone asked, "Would you rather wear blue spandex?"

It does not mean anything back then the writers for comics (Because thats were superman started) were stupid with catch frases and descriptions like on batman back in the day robin would say like jumpin jigsters it's the joker. the superman thing just stuck until now it's a modern film of superman what do you expect. I mean they changed a lot of the storylines on a lot of timeless superhereos, like on spider man what happened to the king pin and wasn't harry osbourne suppose to become the new green goblin before the sand man is supposed to appear in spiderman3 yes I know the whole plot. Superman returns should be good!!!

Funny thing about movies is that they will always reflect the sign of the times. you watch movies from 10 years ago and you can almost tell what is going on in the world. currently the world has an anti-American tone to it. There is after all a war in progress. Now if you take a look into comic books (yes comic books) they too will have a gritty reflection of our society, for example i recall seeing many poster to where "Superheroes" were struck in awe of the attack on September 11th. and the reflection of true heroes were brought to the fore-front.
