Several reasons, but mainly because they can. In some cases, it is for bragging rights, but in most cars, it is simply a matter of how they are geared. The top gear in a ca is made to curise at highway speeds while the engine operates relatively low in its rpms. If it can go 70 at 3500 rpm, then guess what happens if you rev it to 6 or 7 grand? I suppose manufacturers could install spedd limiters, but most of these are actually rev limiters and would restrict passing ability.

The better question would be why my VW Golf's speedo goes to 160. I have had it up to 120 and am convinced the only way it will do 160 is if I have it air dropped out of a plane.

because many people will pay more for a car that has the capability of going really fast. And it isn't that you CAN'T speed past 70, it's that you MAY NOT. I've seen plenty of people going a whole lot over 70mph.

and there are no speed limits on the highway in either Montana or Wyoming, so you theoretically MAY go over 100 there.

The reason why you can't go over 70 mph because it is for your safety, a car is designed to over 100 mph i so you can pass traffic safely, speed limits are used so people can't go out of control.

It's a tease really. The worst is the imported sports cars who can't even get out of first gear without speeding. Good thing I can't afford one, it would be too frustrating.
