Do you mean "musty"? Like wet carpet or wood? I am not familiar with basements since I lived in Ca. most of my life but I know if you have wood floors the areas where the floor is squeaky the most is where there was probably a water leak at one time or possibly still is. It's possible the leak was fixed but wasn't allowed to dry thoroughly enough before putting carpeting back on and could be mildewy underneath. Which would explain the strong odor. I had to pull back my carpeting and used alot of Lysol spray (about 3 cans to remove bacteria) and left a fan on in the area for 48 hours or so until I didn't smell it anymore. I hope this helps a little. Good luck!

Most likely a problem with ventilation. Most basements have few windows, and what windows are present are usually very small. It is natural for moisture to migrate through foundation walls and the humidity in basements will usually be higher than that in the rest of the house.

Best advice is to open the windows and arrange a fan to pull air out one of the windows. You also might want to put a dehumidifier in the basement. When the heating season returns, make sure that heating vents and any cold air returns are operational in the basement in order that the air gets circulated.

Good luck with your problem.

Clean the floor with bleach water you probably just need a dehumidifier in the basement even tho it looks dry, put some charcoal in bowls and set it around in different ares of the basement the charcoal will absorb the odors and the dehumidifier will help as well.

what was the previous use of the basement?
you ought to have paid a reputable company for a pre-purchase inspection. the smell could be rotten timber.

it's proably DIRT.I wouldn't worry.especially if it's an OLDER house.I'm guessing it has a crawl space or dirt basement.
