Originally, in Fantastic Four #48, it was an energy barrier set around The Great Refuge, when Black Bolt decided to isolate The Inhumans from the rest of the world, and tragically, separating Johnny Storm from Crystal. Of course, they were eventually re-united.
What is commonly now called The Negative Zone was originally called "sub-space". Unfortunately, Stan Lee wasn't re-reading his back issues closely & called it "The Negative Zone" when he re-introduced it.
