1) Bullshit. I never really learned how to make small talk, so I think I was screwed to begin with. You need to attempt not to connect with anyone on a deeper level - keep it shallow and light-hearted. Occasionally this bullshit will lead you to believe that another person is worth deeper conversation - it is rare. Take the opportunity cautiously, because some people will stab you in the back a second after calling you their friend.

2) Suck up. They say no body likes a suck-up, but the fact is that most people LOVE a suck-up - when you're sucking up to them. Don't be obviously obsequious in front of all your coworkers or anything, but buttering up a boss or a customer is a way to ensure staying on their good side. Just don't be obvious, because they will be offended if you're being ridiculous about sucking up to them.

3) Don't gossip. It's really hard in jobs like that, but don't be friends with anyone there. Even if you're telling a close friend from work something juicy, they might (will probably) mention it to THEIR close friend at work, and so on and so on until the truth is completely distorted and someone gets offended, and you get demoted or fired or something retarded.

It's stupid, but that's what you have to do. I'm being 100% serious. This is from ym own work experience in hospitality.
