Dr. James van Allen and Dr. Robert Park have made very convincing arguments about the wastefulness in terms of costs and uselessness interms of science being done of manned spaceflight. Manned spaceflight is at minimum 10 times more expensive than robotic missions, and the only place in the solar system than can be explored by humans is Mars. But there are already robotic missions in place and planned for Mars, including sample-return missions. A manned mission to Mars will simply be redundant.

Something learned from the Apollo era is that we are great field geologists. A robot grabbing soil samples could possibily miss something very important just a few meters away.

And all the science done by the rovers in two years could probably have been done by man in a matter of days.

Despite advances in robotic technology, the general impression is that there will be tasks that will require direct human interaction, although not as many as currently presumed. Mostly the reasoning is that it makes for better PR to have a manned presence in space than simply use unmanned missions. Ultimately, we as a society will need to decide if we wish to colonise space, and we would have to research effective methods for manned travel if we decide in favour.

IT has to do with the whole "Mommy I want to be an astronaut" thing... A robot will not be happy to fly in space. They spend money to make it a human experience the deal of going out to outer space. I would pay to go up there if I had the chance, or the money.

That's because those doctors are mad from not being allowed on the space flight. Who wouldn't want to experience it firsthand(traveling in space)?
