FOOTBALL! That's a strange name for 'Padded Rugby'. I was born and live in the US and I confess I like 'American Football'. I'm a 'Jets' fan. But you are right. I always wondered why it's called football when it rarely uses the feet to play, actually it only uses the feet in four plays... Punting (when one team kicks the ball towards the other teams' part of the field when they have to give up possession). Kickoff ( at the beginning of each half and when the opposing team scores). Field goal ( when a team decides to go for 3 points kicking the ball over the goal). And Extra Point ( when a team kicks a field goal after scoring a 'touchdown' for an extra point).
Maybe it has something to do with the reason Americans use inches, yards, miles, pints, quarts, gallons, ounces, pounds, Fahrenheit (temperature), etc.... Instead of the "Metric System" the rest of the world uses.
And as obnoxious as it sounds people here don't care about it. They don't even know where Brazil is on a Map, they think it's in Africa somewhere....I'm serious!
I'm Brazilian by heart and can tell you this... Futbol (Soccer) is the World sport and, unfortunately, the gringos have no clue.
I used to hate watching american 'Football', but my brother was a fan so I had no choice but to watch it sometimes. It's a very interesting game once you learn the rules. Very strategic. Almost like a 'War Game'. You would have to know it, understand it, and "Feel" it to know what it's like... That's exactly what Americans have to do in order for Futbol (Soccer) to become a major sport in the United States. I hope I answered you question.

I'm American, but I can't answer your question. I can tell you, however, that American football is not every American's favorite sport. As for me, I think I'd rather have every hair plucked individually from my head than sit through an American football game. It's the most ridiculous sport ever invented. Some more stupid facts about American football: players get paid millions of dollars a year, and yet they only play 16 games in the regular season; the game is theoretically supposed to last 1 hour (4 quarters of 15 minutes each), and yet it takes about 3 hours to play; the players wear so much padding they couldn't display real athleticism if they wanted to... and the list goes on, and it includes your observation that it's called football when the ball comes in contact with the players' feet only occasionally.

So, yeah, I really can't give you an answer for this one, but feel comforted in knowing that there are Americans who recognize that it's a silly sport and that the rest of the world is right not to give a damn about it.

Ah, but soccer (football to everyone outside the US), that's a real sport!

It's derived from rugby football, so that's why it's football. I guess the real question is, "Why is rugby football called football?" I guess when it comes to football there's;

Amercian football
Gaelic football
Australian football
Canadian football
rugby league football
rugby union football
soccer football
