Because coal mines are dangerous structurally, and because they make miners sick (think blacklung). The health risks are not worth the risk to mine coal when we are onto more sustainable resources like solar power.

They were losing money. If they were making money some company would have bought them and made some money. The price of coal is soaring nowadays so maybe they will be back? The face is though, the big strip mines in Australia, Canada etc. will probably always have lower production costs. The miners were bitter about losing their work but if you had to find guys to go down in a mine in the UK nowadays, I doubt very few young men would be interested.
