A Field Trip ... is going "out into the field" or going out of school to study something that cannot easily be brought into the classroom such as a zoo, lake, river, pond, museum, almost any place that the teacher chooses to take the children. It is normally a trip lasting several hours, or perhaps the whole day.

One of our classes had a field trip to a hospital to watch surgery being performed (from the gallery) and we got to touch an amputated arm too!!!

Another field trip we took was to the lake to study different plants and animals found there. We had to collect 20 samples to take back to the classroom.

If I understand your question correctly, a field trip is when a teacher brings his or her students to a location off campus. Usually, this location is somehow related to what the class is studying and is an educational trip. For example, a class studying California history might visit Sutter's Fort, the State Capital in Sacramento, or a California mission. If they are studying agriculture they might visit a farm. Parent volunteers often chaperone on field trips. Speaking from experience, field trips were such an exciting part of the school year that as a kid I often couldn't sleep the night before. I don't remember everything I read in books, but I remember every trip to the zoo :)
