, we have microwaves, indoor plumbing, travelled the farthest
reaches of our solar system, highly advanced medicine.........
but we also have AIDS, what-do-we-do-with-all-that-nuclear-waste,
methamphetamine, impossible traffic jams, and so on......so, are
we really really, just because of some creature comforts we have
that they didn't, better off? Why?

Yes, because we are evolving into a globally concerned society, as opposed to an individually concerned one.

We're better off now, the "Good Old Days" never existed. We live longer and work less. AIDS is nothing next to diseases of the past. Drug use has been a problem for centuries, wars have been fought over opium. Traffic jams are better than streets with open sewers and horse crap everywhere.

Good question....our lives may be much more CONVENIENT, but whether or not we are 'better off' is debatable. I think that there was a lot more respect for EVERYTHING back in the day....I wish I lived during a time when people had more respect. I would say that our ancestors would be ashamed of the way we treat each other these days....and the way so many people have no respect for themselves. Sad.

Depends on what you mean by "better off"
I like the longer life spans, fast transportation, instant communication, and I'm seriously attached to flush plumbing (though two walls of my bathroom are just bug screen, so I can't quite call it "indoor plumbing".)

Did you watch the TV show "1900s House," where modern people lived "old-style" lives? The participants were pretty happy to get back to modern living.

You didn't mention what it is they had that we don't...

in some ways yes and some ways no they had it tough especially the women not sure I'd like to go back in time but I think we have it to easy we're such a rush rush society that we don't take time to smell the flowers so to speak and some I won't say all take so much for granted an example would be I know peeps that give their kids everything they want at such young ages that by the time their adults nothing is left to get them.
we have advantages and opportunities that they didn't have but sometimes I wonder is it worth it u know?

You can answer your own question by contemplating this one:

why don't you give up the modern life and go be a hunter gatherer in a remote area of Montana?
