Some people just don't understand rap music and are close minded so they don't listen and know that most rap music speaks the truth

From what I've seen, a lot people have complained that rap is "all about drugs, money and bling" and that it's filled with profanity and it degrades women. And from what I've seen and heard in the mainstream media, that's unfortunately true. But what most of the people that complain about rap's many vices don't realize is that they're only seeing one dimension of rap. The mainstream media has been oversaturated by cookie-cutter rappers because right now, they're the ones bringing their record companies the most money. Some, like me, might be old enough to remember this and some might not be, but back in the late 80's and early to mid 90's there was a lot of variety and substance to rap. THAT is what's sorely lacking in mainstream rap right now - variety and substance. There's nothing to choose from anymore, kinda like going to McDonald's and seeing nothing but fries on the overhead menu.
Fortunately for those of us who haven't given up on hip hop, there's still variety and substance out there if you know where to look. There's always one source of good, quality rap music: the underground circuit. For instance...

And if you're into beats/instrumentals more than the MC, then check out some stuff from Jay Dee, aka - J Dilla (R.I.P.), 9th Wonder, Nicolay and Fat Jon to name a few.
Try it. You might like it. ^_^

*Standing up for RAP MUSIC*
Honestly, all rap music is not the same..most people only find the negative things about rap music..there are lots of positive rappers and rap music out there. I agree that there are lots of rap songs that degrade women, but there are also songs made to empower women as well. Everyone listens to different styles of rap music. Examples of positive rap music..
Independent Women- Destiny's Child
I Know I Can - Nas
Diamonds (From Sierra Leone)- Kanye West
World's Greatest- R.Kelly
Survivor- Destiny's Child
Bounce, Bounce - Fatty Koo
Where is the Love - ?uestlove feat. Justin Tim.
Miss You- Aaliyah

True music lovers should like all music. The thing that turns me off to some rap is the language ==> sex, drugs. If someone can't do anything but talk about that, they need help. Otherwise it's great.

Very good question and well put, I'll start with. My answer is the fact the "songs" are not composed of any vocal lyrics. Sure, they may have some people sining in the back, but the foreground is where someone should be singing. To answer your second question, though well hidden, I will say no. If you love women, do you love every woman you see? (Think about the posibilities!)

The thing I don't like about most rap is that it has tons of cussing, sexual content, and violent content. Of course, I also have a problem with other types of music that do this, but it seems to happen more in rap.

I think alot of the bashing and bad public image it has is really from the artists who write and perform this type of music. Alot of them come from slummy, underpriveleged environments, many of whom needing to grow up fast and become very guarded.....but in the same breath, not very tactful or restrained. Look at all the violence out there. In Dorchester, some teens were murdered outside a recording studio. There's too much sophistication of violence in the rap market, thanks to "untouchable" kingpins like Suge Knight and women who have no shame in committing perjury ala Li'l Kim.

Rap music has had a hard time since the era of ganster rap. its because of all the artists singing about violence and rape and gats and ho's and such. by the looks of their videos and choice of words it makes it seem as if the artists are advocating what they are singing about. most of the time this fact isnt true, but then you get the street wars and attacks that get national news and attention. do you remember the Tupac-Biggie conflict? if not, how about D12 group member Proof's recent murder? rap music has been a constant catalyst of violence since the ninties, and not much has changed since then.

some rap music is good and i am into the emo kinda stuff,
when the artists rap about a story in their life or about their feelings then i respect it, but lately its just about body parts and clubbing, and thats what i dislike about it, i guess its just the style of the music

I like all music. It's just the "kill kill N***** N**** F*** F***" that I can't stand. A rap song with actual lyrics or a good story is fine with me, but there aren't many of them out now.
And it's irritating how people who like rap confuse rhythm with beat....

The rap, or any kind of music for that matter, that I hate is that which objectifies women or promotes violence and drug use. I also hate trying to listen on the radio or on TV when half of it is censored.
