First of all, your mother should have token you before your 18th birthday. Your first visit, with Mom, should have been when you first started having crazy (irregular) periods), or just for a regular ob-gyn check-up to make sure that your periods, female organ, etc. are regular. I would approach her by asking her when should a lady have her first visit? And if she ask why, tell her that U are concern about your health and why she hasn't token you to your first visit like some of your girlfriend's moms; and with all the reports U hear about women's diseases, especially breast cancer (ob-gyn's will exam your breast not only for lumps but for other things like irregular breast shape/sizes (some women have one breast shaped different from the other). Going to a gyn do not mean that U did, are or going to have sex. It means that U are conscience about your health as a whole, like going to a dentist and a general doctor. If U have your own insurance, just go.

You're right, you should have seen a GYN after you started your first period. I'm sorry that your mom has a hang up with you going to the doctor about this. Now that you are 18, I would go to Planned Parenthood with a friend. I'm not a woman, but I think you can go there before you are 18, but now that you are legally an adult you can have private sessions your mother will not know about.

Actually you should start seeing a OBGYN when you become sexually active OR 18 years of age. You have two options. You can tell you mom you want to go about your periods, tell her how bad they are or how often, or what ever the problem may be. Or you can contact a local planned parenthood or health department. They will provide birth control services for little or no money. And the great thing is, it is completely confidental. Your mom will never know unless you tell her. Good luck with either you decide.

Sounds like your mother is a little niave! Contrary to popular belief, starting your period is not a cue to go to a gyn! Your family practitioner can care for you if you are having normal cycles and not having sex, however, you should start going to a gynocologist when you become sexually active *OR* start having problems with your periods, which is probably where your mother is confused. Im assuming you need your mothers permission because you are covered under her insurance. Sit her down, tell her you did some research about when it's appropriate to go to a gyn, explain your situation to her, even without telling her about being sexually active. Talk to her adult to adult, express your concerns matter of factly. If she still refuses, make an appointment with Planned Parenthood. They use a sliding scale to charge their patients and if you explain your situation to them they will do their best to help you out. It is illegal for any healthcare provider to tell your parents anything about your medical information without your written permission. This is your body! Its the only one you get! You have to do what *you* feel is right for your health and wellbeing!

Solve the problem and go to Planned Parenthood and you can do that based on a sliding scale AND get all the check ups you need. Nobody can tell your Mom your 'sexual activity' as you are entitled to patient privacy EVEN AS A MINOR! So please, go get checked out and see what's up.. Planned Parenthood is a good resource for young women.
If you truly want to see a Gyne and you are still on their insurance.. find out the insurance plan, find a doc (if you know hers) and make the appt.. you ARE 18 :) Pay the co-pay yourself and because yuo are 18, any bills/test results etc.. should be mailed in your name anyway :)
Good Luck Dear!!

Sweetie, your 18...you dont have to ask your mother.....unless your covered by her insurance, then she would find out. Your mother should take you to the GYN regardless of whether or not she thinks its a valid reason, there is no way she can find out you're sexually active.....your GYN can not discuss anything with her. I wouldnt worry if I were you:)

Like other people are saying your 18 and don't have to ask. I don't know what health insurance you have but find a doc. who is covered by your health insurance, and make and appt. and go by yourself. And if your scared to go by yourself, take a gal pal along. They won't go in the room with you though! You should either be able to A- Call up the docs office and ask if they take your health insurance or B- Call the insurance co. and ask for a list of doctors in your area that they will cover and go from there. Goodluck!

You are 18 years old, you don't need your mother's permission. Go see the doc on your own.
