Common symptoms are swelling and soreness.
changeing the barbell - You stick out your tongue and grab the bottom ball with one hand and the top ball with the other, then twist the bottom ball til it comes loose, unscrew it all the way and pull the top ball up and the barbell will come out. It is not recomended to change the jewelry until the piercing is fully healed! If you remove it before healing is done it will close fairly quicklly. To put a new one in you remove a ball from the jewelry then insert it into the top hole in your tongue, while still holding the top ball screw on the bottom ball.
how to keep it clean - non-alcoholic antibacterial mouth wash such as biotene, if you are going to use listerene you need to water it down %50 as the alcohol does damage to the healing piercing. You need to rinse after every time you eat smoke or drink anything other then water. Brush your teeth 3 times a day, and teh post of the jewelry with a new soft bristle tooth brush. If your tongue starts to turn white you are cleaning it to often.
How to keep the swelling down - ice, ice pops, ice cream, and ibuprofin if you are not allergic (advil, or motrin)
Stay away from - spicy foods, beer, and I hear spaghetti can get caught on the barbell so watch out for that.

Ordinarily, you may experience a swollen tongue ring piercing for the first 3-5 days. During that time, you may also notice that the piercing has a bit of clear, watery discharge, and even some very mild bleeding. Normally, the bleeding will stop within the first 24 hours of the initial piercing, however, the discharge may continue for several days or even weeks more. Keep in mind, this discharge is normal and actually serves to help prevention an infection of the wound.
Having said that, if your situation is unique from the above, and you are still experiencing swelling and/or bleeding and discharge outside of the normal scope outlined above, you should remove the piercing and see a qualified health care provider immediately. Possible infections are NOT something you want to take a chance with. In extreme cases, an infected tongue left to long can actually cause the person to have to have it surgically removed to prevent spread of the infection!

Most people experience swelling the first few days. You can suck on ice cubes and eat popcicles to reduce the swelling. You change the barbell by holding the balls and twisting left. Righty tighty lefty loosey. You keep it clean by brushing your teeth and using mouthwash. Keep your hands out of your mouth unless they are clean.
Don't fuss over it too much, you'll make it mad. It should be fine in about 4 days.
If it gets infected DO NOT TAKE IT OUT. That will close off the drainage holes. Go back to where you got it pierced if it gets infected and they can take it from there.

I got my tounge peirced a few months ago. It's not as bad as everybody thinks trust me. Common symptoms for me was the swelling, It was hard to eat at first. To change the barbell you just take one ball off..bottom or top, it doesn't matter..and you can just slide it right out. To keep it clean you should rinse your mouth with mouthwash after avery time you eat (for the first 2 or 3 weeks)
