Alienware is probably one of the best, but will cost you three legs and both arms. I've seen some good stuff come from HP lately, and would go with them if my desktop was getting too old. I've had good experiences with Compaq in the past, so they might be something to look into.
Sony Vaio is an awesome machine if you're looking to spend in the upper range.
One guy that sells laptops told me to only buy IBM, because they are the ones that supply the military.

I think all laptops are ok - with the exception of Fujitsu and Acer, I've used those 2 brands before and they're crap, the hardware doesn't work well with the OS and with Fujitsu, the parts were shonky and kept falling off.
So it comes down to price and features.
If you want something small, portable and good looking - get an Apple or a Sony Vaio. You'll have to pay higher prices though (if you compare similar features across the board).
If you want value for money, try Dell. I am using a Dell at home, and I really do think it's cheaper. They're also very sturdy (I've used Compaq/HPs and they tend to give a lot of hinge problems). I did my research online and feature for feature, I paid at least $800 less for a Dell (in Singapore) than I would have for something similar from IBM/Lenovo, HP, Toshiba, etc.
I also like that you don't have to go to a store and get sold something by salespeople who don't know what they're talking about.

I just recently bought a Compaq Presario and have been extremely happy with it, although they are going all AMD in the Compaq department (good for performance, but no so good for battery life). I've also heard good comments from those who bought HP laptops (same people who make Compaq). I've also read here on Yahoo! Answers that Toshiba is the number one selling laptop brand in many areas, and I've owned many Toshiba electronics without ANY problems whatsoever. I've heard mixed reviews on Dell laptops, and bad reviews on Averatec.
For more pricey options, I would also consider an IBM laptop or an Asus laptop. For linux laptops, I would definately recommend System76, and if you want a non-major brand laptop you could try CyberPower (more geared towards gaming, however).

Toshiba laptops are best to my experience. Stay away from HP laptops and computers no questions asked.

Most major brands are fine. You need to look at the specs to decide.
Or go to a reviews site:
