Participating in sports causes one to organize their time especially if you are still in school. Sports are usually team events which teach us how to play on a team and interact with others. Sports teach us that we don't always win and how to handle defeat. Sports demand us to be aware of our bodies thus we tend to be careful what we eat and drink. Since we are around like minded people we tend to stay away from smoking and drugs.

Anyone who's participated in a sport could answer this question. Both winning and losing set up moral areas for us to succeed (or fail). We all hear the "good sport" tag on some people. Even golf being played alone can build character. Do you keep proper score? Is the eraser your favorite part of the pencil?

I believe that it does. As a cross-country runner, I learned the value of working hard. I also learned about teamwork and looking out for others. I was team captain, and my coach admonished me for running ahead of the other girls on training runs. He said that it was my responsibility to show the others the way, to check on them and encourage them, so I got so I would run a block ahead and then come back and help them. This has helped me to be a "team player" at jobs and with my family.
I also coached for the "Girls on the Run," program which is all about building character in girls.
Sports can really boost ones self-esteem too. I was very shy and skinny when I was in school but when I joined teams, I became more popular and years later I still run into people who remember because of my participation in sports!

I don't think it makes that much difference on way or another. Dr. Naismith invented basketball to keep young men out of trouble and away from women. So much for that! Sports do give a lot of people direction in live though, and are a lot better than just hanging out or sitting in front of the TV (or a computer?!).

These parents don't know they're needed til they're asked. Why not ask one of them to do a Newsletter that comes out once a month and put all your requests in that. Fundraising days - rotas - and pester pester. My kids have belonged to various sports clubs and all the parents were roped in. Give them no choice! And good luck.

Unless you plan to be a Lone Ranger in your carreer or in your personal life then team sports will be helpful. If you can learn through them to give and take, to realize that it the group's ( be it community, job, family or friend's) welfare that counts and enhances your life then it will be worth it .

I believe it does when you're younger and have the right kind of coach. But it seems what we see from professional sports these days is a damn shame.
