I am hispanic from New Mexico so we don't look at all like any of the hispanics in Texas. And my grandmother and sister have almond shaped eyes and flat cheekbones.

I believe it is because we have more American Indian blood in us; in fact, there are many Navajos who are indigenous to the area where my family is from. Navajos have very strong oriental-like features. Combine that with the fairness of our true Spanish ancestors (we can trace our lineage all the way back to the Spanish conquistadors), and our family has very fair skin.

So we have very white skin, black straight hair and almond shaped eyes and wide, flat cheek bones. Hence, we look oriental!

Below is a very interesting site about this.

I'm Mexican-American too, and I also have almond shaped eyes. When I was younger people sometimes thought I was Native American, but when I got older, most people thought I was Filipino. I easily made friends with Asians because they assumed I was also Asian, and sometimes Filipinos I'd meet in stores would talk to me in Tagalog. I'm pretty sure I have no Asian ancestors. I have no idea why you or I have almond shaped eyes, or facial features that resemble Filipinos, but that's just the way we're made. I've seen lots of Latinos who naturally have blonde hair, or blue eyes. We're all different.

Well many Mexicans and other Latinos are purely "Indian" - native Americans. Some are mixed with European or maybe African ancestors to some degrees. Colombians and Argentinians have more European ancestors and so look Spanish and Italian. Puerto Ricans and other Caribbean people have a more African ancestry. People that I have met other nations, like Paraguay or Peru, seem to have less foreign ancestors and look more Indian.

It could be that Mexicans and Filipinos actually share ancestors. It is believed that Alaska used to connect to Asia and that Asians crossed over to North America. So from Eskimos in the north to the Natives of South American they probably have Asian ancestors.

Oh, and also the Phlipines and Mexico were basically invaded and occupied by Spaniards for many decades.

Filipinos themselves are genetically related to Spainards! Just like mexico, The Philippines were colonized by Spain resulting in a native and Spainish mix.

Many people from Asia emigrated to Mexico, but I would bet your looks come from your indian backround. A perculiar eye shape runs in my family. Its from an indian forebearer.
