ok!
the zamboni was invented by someone called frank j. zamboni (obviously)
first it uses a blade to shave the top of the ice that people have picked on and made bumps, holes, ect.
then another blade collects the shavings into a snow tank.
then, water is rushed through from the wash-water tank to the 'conditioner' which vacumes, filter and returns the water back to the tank.
Last, clean warm water is spread on the ice by a towel (sorta like a squeege) and left to freeze. if the 'fridge' underneath the ice isnt cold enough, when you go on the ice, it's still obviously wet, but its fun for kids to play with!

The Zamboni heats the ice under it evenly so that it can be smooth.

ER... magic?

Seriously.... The contraption has a heated pad, which is dragged across the ice as the machine moves. The pad melts some of the top layer of ice, and after driving onwards, the water re-freezes, creating a pristine, accurate surface with a shiny glossy sheen.

Or... it could be magical elves.

It wets the ice and smooths it with a brush.
