Old interpretation- different type of sun = super powers
New interpretation - Aparantly he's some kind of plant who gets his energy from the sun, in addition to that the people from the planet krypton were naturally stronger and faster than people of neighboring worlds and during periods of their history enjoyed legends of being fierce conquerers. - all gleaned from the mind of my nephew

he was born on Krypton with a red sun
his powers come from the fact that the earth has a yellow sun
..sounds like bunk to me.but it was a 50's comic book
maybe his home planet had greater gravity..that would explain the strength and even flight..the original superman could not fly..he could jump super huge distances though..

He gets his powers from the sun on his planet there was no sun so he had no powers but in our galaxy he gets his poer as long as there is no Kryptonite nearby
