why is the pay so low for jobs in social work?

Because society still does not reconize the need for social workers, especially in the educational system. There is such an emphasis on NCLB and academic acheivement but they do not understand that in order for a child to achieve academically, they need to be in a place where they can do so. So many kids are underachieving because of mental, emotional, and environmental issues. We need to take a look at the needs of the whole child before we expect them to come to school everyday and learn. The second piece is school districts are too cheap to spend the money for social workers. It's unfortunate for the children.

Isnt that an absolute shame? Maybe they think that your peace of mind/satisfaction makes up for the lack of pay. Sounds to me like you want to pursue such a career but...
This is a really tough question. Maybe get an advanced degree and go into politics and/or run a social foundation, etc. and change these sorts of things. They've been saying the same thing about qualified teachers for a while too...

Jobs that require compassion seem to pay poorly (social work, nursing, teaching). Hmmm.

I used to date someone in college who became a social worker--very challenging work without much in pay. She's made it work over the years, but wow!

Part of the issue is that we're often relying on tax dollars to do this which means that people indirectly effected get to make decisions for those most directly effected by social workers.

Good luck

These jobs do not produce money, but serve as a gatekeeper for tax dollars. So they do not produce anything that replenishes the coffers. Been there, doing that. :O)
