I don't know if it's statistically worse than before - it's just publicized more. I still believe in random acts of kindness; I realize that going 60 in a residential neighborhood is only going to save me 30 seconds; I smile when people pass me by. Some would think it makes me naive - I think it makes less jaded. : )

This is a very good question. Not only is the country sharply divided into two "camps", but everybody seems more concerned with beating up the other side than identifying and solving problems.

How does spewing hatred about George Bush (or Hillary Clinton) help the hungry, the homeless, etc.?

I've noticed the same thing! It seems that when the overmonied get in power, it becomes fashionable to be demanding, hateful and rude. (Remember the whiney Yuppies of the "Dutch" Reagan regime?).
Well, the richkids are back in town and their here to make life miserable.
I live in Haliburton country,California and shortly before this regime took the whitehouse, I tried to take my wife to a very exclusive restaurant.
We were seated across the room from a bunch of loudmouth, harddrinking Haliburton execs and had to listen to them go on about how Cheney was going to be the next V/P. ( He hadn't annonced it yet).
Disgusting.
