I think you answered your question without even realizing it. You can install pc2700 ddr memory. It is also known as DDR333. The link is to Newegg, 512mb starts at $45 shipped. Much cheaper than Best Buy, Circuit City etc...
Some people will tell you to only buy the expensive brands, but I have never noticed a problem with the lesser known brands. Look for lots of reviews, it is usually a good indication of a well liked product.
I would suggest checking to see if you computer will support 1gb (probably) and purchase that. 512mb is fine for WinXP but 1gb makes it hum right along.
Hope this helps.
Just a note, you cannot use DDR2. It is not physically the same, the slots the memory installs in are different configurations.

First you need to figure out what kind of motherboard you have, what kind of memory it will support, and the maximum memory it will allow. If you can use PC3200 DDR, that would be better; and DDR 2 is better than that. (but like the guy above says...you can't use that) Put as much as the motherboard can handle, if you can - with an older PC. This will add some life to your computer. I've also had great luck w/ NewEgg many times over.
Good luck!

Open up your comuter abnd count memory slots or use a program like Belarc Advisor to tell you about your memory.
The general rule is to buy the same type you already have, because you know it works. The question is how much memory your motherboard allows.
It is safe to populate all your slots with the largest size memory stich you currently have, but if you have four 32 MB sticks, that won't help much.
Your computer Manufacturer's web site may tell you how much memory you can put in your computer.
