backing up your computer means copying the files and stuff on your hard drive to a removable media (like DVD-RW or CD-RW)
Its a good way to make sure that if something happens to your system (virus, power surge, etc.) you still have the information that was on it and it can be put back (albeit not the newest version necessarily)

Presumably there are some things on yiour computer that you would miss if your hard drive self destructed. Only you know what is inmportant to you, it could be documents, pictures, music, movies, whatever.
Backup means to copy those files somewhere else so that if you computer dies, you still have them.
You can backup to CD's or DVD's, an external drive, a thumb drive, whatever works for you.

To 'backup' the comp is to back up the hard drive. This is done in case you mess something up, or in case the computer crashes, which is never any fun. But its not so bad if you have the back up, wich will allow you to get right back into the game, so to say.
