...what does "use discretion" mean (yes or no optioned answer)? I don't understand the verbage and the connection to the "Can we contact your former employer?"... thanks!

If you ask the prospective employer to use discretion with your previous employer, they are going to verify your employment without telling the previous employer that you have applied with them.

The verbiage used here probably means they want to contact a previous employer without letting them know you are applying for a job with them, henceforth using discretion.

It means depending on who in the company calls will they blurt out you are looking for another job, instead of letting them know you are looking for another job by saying how long has he been there & what type of employee is he?

Employers can only give information to certain people. I always said we do not give that information over the telephone & give them our address. No discretion when letter with letterhead comes to office.

The usually just verify your work dates. They are not aloud to say much else.
