It has been a while since I have crocheted and I am making a baby blanket and it says to do a hdc. I belive that is a half double and think I have done it before but if someone could refresh my memory and explain how to do it I would appriciate it. Thank you

Basically a HDC is taking first loop already on hook (1 loop), wrapping the yarn once (2 loops), then insert hook, Pull up one loop (3 loops), Yarn over, pull through all loops on hook.

The web page I listed is great, it has video and pictures. so you should be able to get the idea.

And rock on you hooker! (*wink*)

Stitch definitions vary between British and American patterns. In American patterns, a single crochet (sc) is done by putting the hook through the next stitch, drawing up a loop, wrapping the yarn over and drawing through both loops on the hook.

A double crochet (dc) starts with wrapping the yarn around the hook, then drawing up a loop, wrap the yarn around the hook, draw through two loops, wrap again and draw through remaining two loops.

A half double crochet (hdc) starts out like a dc, by wrapping the yarn over the hook. Once you have drawn up a loop, you then pull it through all the stitches on the hook. The result is a relatively fat stitch, taller than an sc, and shorter than a dc.

British patterns call an sc a double crochet, so a dc is a triple crochet. Not sure what they call an hdc.

Hope that helps! Lots of web sites to explain this, too. Just Google "crochet stitches".
