I think... haha... that there are two reasons. When most people ask questions, they want straight answers. They want to know that whoever is speaking knows what they are talking about. When someone begins a sentence with "I believe" or "My opinion is..." it shows less certainty than simply saying "This is how it is."

In addition, for the sarcastic and cynic minded, it's also a much weaker way of responding or presenting an idea. It's passive. You can cop out and say "Well, it was just my opinion, or just what I believe, you don't have to agree."

When people get into arguments, they jump at the chance to bolster their side, and when someone is presenting an idea by beginning with a qualifier such as, "Now, this is just my opinion, but..." it just gives others that much more opportunity to disagree.

I think sarcasm is funny. I believe if it were not for sarcasm I would have a coronary by now. My truth is sarcasm has been my salvation from all the half witted quarries posted on this particular forum. It is my opinion that while I find the entertainment value of yahoo answers to be quite high, I think it is a complete waste of my existence.

I think it's because there is a personal attachment to something that I believe in, so others who think the opposite thing, will not accept my truth, and my opinion is that they resent anyone for making them feel inferior or wrong in some way.
honestly, there are many opinions, thoughts, and beliefs floating around out there, but only one truth. its just a matter of figuring out how closely your opinions, thoughts and beliefs line up with it. the people who are farthest from it, are usually the most sarcastic and cynical. It's a defense mechanism.

Thanks for such a thought provoking question. My son and I were just talking about the same thing. I think..(oops) means I take ownership for whatever follows. In truth...(oops, I did it again) means that I believe something to be proven or fact and in my opinion...(when will I ever learn?) can sometime threaten an insecure person. You know I think that I believe in my true and honest opinion that this is one of the best questions I've ever encountered. Please keep asking...it forces me to keep using my brain.

I don't know. I can't understand why people get annoyed by another person's opinion or belief. Sure, you don't have to agree, but everyone's got an opinion (hopefully anyway or we'd have a world full of followers), and there is nothing wrong with voicing differences of opinion in a constructive way.

Because they are acknowledgements that the information about to be presented are not intended by its author as fact. Unfortunately, some people are so aggressive about everything being incontrovertible in fact that they fail to allow some discussions that could be interesting to form. These might be the same types of people that cannot stand what if questions.

My opinion is that I think I believe is it is simply because my truth differs from yours.

(Sarcasm aside)

My "truth", or "opinion" is based on my experiences and while with me every experience is a dire matter. Yours are not. Now this is not because deep in my heart I am mean, it is simply that it is almost inherent to human nature. William Shakespeare himself took advantage of this for his own personal gain.

Simple,, I think, I believe My truth and my opinion are just subjective discourse,,, NOW if someone said "I know" and could sustain that statement with scientific proof people may not be so quick to pour scorn,
