I really shouldn't be answering this question because I have a similar issue in that the common social introduction around here is "How is it going" and my responce is "I don't know or I'd rather not say" or something like that.
I've been told over and over and over and over again and again that I am suppose to say 'fine and how about you' or something like that.
When I use to hear that , 'wassup' , I would respond with "The sky" or "The sun" or something like that. (Some times x-rated)
I would probably be more interested in you because you though of an answer and didn't give a trite responce BUT I am not there and you are not here.
It is just a social greeting, be polite ( if you feel like it ) and give any responce you feel is appropriate.

A great way to respond to this 'question', if you don't want to start a conversation, is "Nothin' much, you?" which is vague and disinterested enough to discourage even the most gregarious of people. If you are looking for a conversation, give a detailed, if vague, description, even if it does seem obvious to you, like "Oh, just walkin' the dog, trying to think of somethin' to do, y'know?". (Some people aren't as observant as you give them credit for.) This answer could start any number of other conversations, like "Oh, hey, what kind of dog/what's your dog's name, etc." or "Well, I know this great night spot..."
Ha, sorry for the "I am a school teacher" type response -- I didn't realize 'til after.

just say it back or maybe they just want to know whats new besides the obvious. When i say whats up is because im asking whats going on with them at the time not what are you doing right now especially if i have a visual of it.

I would just say how I felt at the moment with the fewest words , may be mixed with a little sense of humor... even if you are worried , or not having fun , you can express that so as to share with the other person. i have seen it has helped feeling better just by the idea of having shared and acknowledged..you can try it too

People who are using this expression are rarely conscious of their environment. They're just saying a pre-recorded phrase that's been in the brain for longtime and they're kind of in the passive mode. Don't worry about their response they're not really with you yet. They're on automatic pilot, trying to be cool. Whenever ... just slowdown and smile.

It means "how are you doing?" or "what's new?"
Just respond with something to get the conversation going:
I'm just walking to X to get a coffee...want to join me?
I'm going to the mall to pick up X's new CD. Do you like that band?
I'm walking my dog but he always pulls on the leash. Got any ideas how to fix that?

depends on the situation.
Sometimes its just a way of saying hello.
you can just say hi for a response.
saying whats up right back to them is good enough.
if they really want to know more they would say somethin like "wassup, how you doing" or "wassup, want to go back to my place"

You could adopt the local lingo and reply:
nuttin
wussup witchoo?
merely give a quick nod in their general direction.
OR
stop them and tell them your complete life story. Hey...they asked.

It's tough to be new in town. Keep it short and toss it back to them. "Not much. You?" Hope your new town treats you well and you have lots of great experiences.
